How to Fix PS5 DualSense Stick Drift (and Stop It Coming Back)

What Is PS5 Stick Drift?

Stick drift is when your PS5 DualSense controller registers movement on a joystick without you touching it. You'll notice it in-game as a character walking on its own, a camera spinning, or a cursor drifting across menus. It's frustrating — and it's extremely common.

What Causes It?

The stock DualSense uses ALPS potentiometer joysticks. These work by measuring electrical resistance through a physical contact wiper. Over time, that contact wears down, gets dirty, or corrodes — and the readings become inaccurate. That inaccuracy is stick drift.

Most controllers start showing drift symptoms within 6–18 months of regular use. Sony's design hasn't fundamentally changed this mechanism across DualSense revisions.

Short-Term Fixes (That Don't Last)

  • Compressed air: Blasting air under the joystick cap can dislodge debris. Works occasionally, temporarily.
  • Contact cleaner spray: Isopropyl or specialist cleaner can clean the potentiometer. Often buys a few more weeks.
  • Adjusting dead zones in-game: Some games let you increase the dead zone so small inaccurate movements are ignored. This masks the problem, not fixes it.
  • Sony replacement: Sony may replace your controller under warranty, but they'll fit the same ALPS joystick — so drift returns.

None of these address the root cause: the ALPS potentiometer design wears out.

The Permanent Fix: Hall Effect (TMR) Joystick Upgrade

Hall Effect joysticks — including the latest TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) variants — use magnets instead of physical contact to detect position. Because there's no friction, no wiper, and nothing to wear out, they don't drift.

TMR Hall Effect joysticks are the technology used in premium controllers like the Xbox Elite and many esports peripherals. Fitting them to your DualSense is the only upgrade that eliminates drift by design.

Why TMR Over Standard Hall Effect?

TMR sensors offer higher precision and better signal-to-noise ratio than first-generation Hall Effect designs. For fast-paced games where input accuracy matters, TMR is the current best-in-class option.

Our PS5 Stick Drift Repair & TMR Upgrade Service

We offer a professional PS5 DualSense repair service that replaces both joysticks with premium Hall Effect TMR modules. Your controller is disassembled, inspected, upgraded, and tested before being returned to you.

Browse our PS5 Repair & Services or go straight to one of our TMR upgrade listings:

What to Expect from the Service

  • Both joysticks replaced (left and right)
  • Full controller inspection included
  • Tested before dispatch
  • Drop-off or postal options available

Is It Worth It?

A new DualSense costs £60–£70. Our TMR upgrade service costs a fraction of that — and the result is a controller that won't drift again. If your controller is otherwise in good condition, an upgrade is almost always the better value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the TMR joysticks feel different?

Slightly. TMR joysticks are typically slightly smoother with a cleaner centre return. Most players adapt within minutes and prefer them.

Does the upgrade void my warranty?

If your controller is out of warranty (most are by the time drift sets in), this doesn't apply. If it's in warranty, contact Sony first.

Can I send a controller that has other faults too?

Yes — mention any additional faults when you book. We'll inspect and advise.
